Mantegna, The "Camera degli Sposi"
Work of the famous painter Andrea Mantegna, the Camera degli Sposi, formerly called “Camera picta” (painted room), was built between 1465 and 1474 and is located in the north-east tower of the Castle of San Giorgio in Mantua.
In 1460 Mantegna was a court painter and the decoration of the room was commissioned by Ludovico Gonzaga: the general theme is a political-dynastic celebration of the entire Gonzaga family, with the occasion of the election of Francesco Gonzaga as cardinal. The room originally had a dual function: that of an audience room (where the marquis dealt with public affairs) and that of a representative bedroom, where Ludovico met with his family.
Mantegna studied a fresco decoration that would invest all the walls and vaults of the ceiling, adapting to the architectural limits of the environment, but at the same time illusionistically breaking through the walls with painting, as if the space had expanded well beyond the physical limits of the room.
After Ludovico’s death, the room and its cycle suffered a series of hardships, which often degraded not only its physical preservation, but also its role in the history of art. A few years after the death of the marquis, the room was used as a warehouse for precious objects.
During the imperial occupation of 1630 it suffered a great deal of damage, only to be virtually abandoned to the elements until about 1875. The room began to be called “Chamber of the Brides” in 1648 by Carlo Ridolfi. In any case, the reference was due to the predominant presence of Ludovico depicted next to his wife, not so much because it was a bridal chamber.
In 1987, a widespread restoration was carried out using modern techniques, which recovered everything that survived, returning the work to studies and public use.
The 2012 Emilia earthquake reopened an old microfissure that runs vertical and then obliquely in the Court scene and peeled off a portion of painted plaster. In 2014, a series of technical interventions began to make the Camera Picta safe from possible earthquakes.
After almost a year of work, on April 2, 2015 the Picta Chamber reopened its treasures to tourists.
